Forgiveness doesn't take place when someone apologizes, forgiveness needs to take place the moment we are wronged.
God forgives us for all our sins against Him, whether we except that forgiveness or not is on us.
“But God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”Romans 5:8 CSB
Love leaves no room for unforgiveness, love embraces others and forbears their shortcomings as God has done for us.
People will wrong us and we will wrong them, sometimes intentionally most of the time unintentionally, this happens every day mostly because we are selfish, stubborn people, we must allow the Holy Spirit free reign in our lives to correct our thinking and our hearts attitude so we are not unforgiving.
Jesus told Peter to forgive as many as 70 times 7, meaning we will forget how many times we forgive others, Jesus did not say wait until they apologize then forgive them 70 times 7.
Jesus looked down from the cross barely breathing, bloody, scarred and dying and said ”Father forgive them for they know not what they do” Luke 23
He did not say, Father, forgive them after they apologize!
Stephen looked up to heaven as he was being stoned to death for preaching the truth and said
“Lord, do not hold this sin against them!” And after saying this, he died.” Acts 7
Forgiveness starts in our hearts, we need to keep our hearts focused on Christ, ask for the help of the Holy Spirit, life is short and fragile, bitterness, unforgiveness, foolishness are all folly of the devil, don't play the fool on his stage, stand up, stand strong in Christ and forgive others as you have been forgiven.
We must lead by example we must follow Christ, surrender our hearts, our hurts, our pain to Him and trust Him in all things to make them right and change hearts, ours and others.
Forgiving others allows us to walk in freedom, in obedience in step with the will of God, forgiveness leads us in the footsteps of Christ.
God’s word says this;
“For if you forgive others their offenses, your heavenly Father will forgive you as well. But if you don’t forgive others, your Father will not forgive your offenses.”Matthew 6:14-15 CSB
“Love is patient, love is kind. Love does not envy, is not boastful, is not arrogant, is not rude, is not self-seeking, is not irritable, and does not keep a record of wrongs. Love finds no joy in unrighteousness but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”1 Corinthians 13:4-7 CSB
“Then Peter approached him and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? As many as seven times?” “I tell you, not as many as seven,” Jesus replied, “but seventy times seven. “For this reason, the kingdom of heaven can be compared to a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. When he began to settle accounts, one who owed ten thousand talents was brought before him. Since he did not have the money to pay it back, his master commanded that he, his wife, his children, and everything he had be sold to pay the debt. “At this, the servant fell facedown before him and said, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you everything’ Then the master of that servant had compassion, released him, and forgave him the loan. “That servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii. He grabbed him, started choking him, and said, ‘Pay what you owe!’ “At this, his fellow servant fell down and began begging him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.’ But he wasn’t willing. Instead, he went and threw him into prison until he could pay what was owed. When the other servants saw what had taken place, they were deeply distressed and went and reported to their master everything that had happened. Then, after he had summoned him, his master said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me. Shouldn’t you also have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ And because he was angry, his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured until he could pay everything that was owed. So also my heavenly Father will do to you unless every one of you forgives his brother or sister from your heart.”Matthew 18:21-35 CSB
“He predestined us to be adopted as sons through Jesus Christ for himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace that he lavished on us in the Beloved One. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace that he richly poured out on us with all wisdom and understanding. He made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he purposed in Christ as a plan for the right time — to bring everything together in Christ, both things in heaven and things on earth in him.”Ephesians 1:5-10 CSB
